There’s a good chance that the famous ball drop in New York City made you think of New Year’s Eve. A new poll, though, says that New York City isn’t the best place to ring in 2024.
WalletHub, a personal finance company, recently released a study that looked at the 100 most populous cities in the United States based on a number of factors, such as cost, safety, and accessibility, to find the best place to enjoy the new year.
Five towns in North Carolina made it into the top 100. Raleigh came in at number 49, Greensboro at number 53, Durham at number 61, and Winston-Salem at number 79. Charlotte was ranked 36th in the country for food and fun, which was the best in the state.
Greensboro was ranked seventh in the country and one of the top ten most affordable places to ring in the new year. Durham also got a high score for cost, coming in at number 16.
You can enjoy New Year’s Eve in the safest place in the Tarhee State, Raleigh. It was ranked fifth in the country for safety and accessibility.
The Best Places to Party in the Nation
In general, New York City came in third, in part because it placed sixth for food and entertainment. Orlando, Florida, and San Diego, California, came in first and second, so that wasn’t enough to push it past them.
WalletHub says that Orlando had “some of the longest fireworks displays in the country” and the best food and entertainment.
Two cities in Florida and three places in California were in the top 10. They found these U.S. cities to be the best places to ring in 2024:

- Miami, Florida
- Los Angeles, California
- Chicago, Illinois
- Denver, Colorado
- Washington, D.C.

Some of the things that made Orlando the best were its music, fireworks, and cheap restaurants. Since the weather is mild, there are lots of great restaurants in San Diego, and people search Google a lot for words like “New Year’s Eve party” and “New Year’s Eve dinner.”
WalletHub found that there are some places that aren’t as good for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The poll found that North Las Vegas was the worst place for food, entertainment, and prices. It was also at the bottom of the list. Here are the last five cities on WalletHub’s list: Laredo, Texas; Fremont, California; Hialeah, Florida; and Fremont, California.
Fremont had the worst score for fun and food, and Hialeah had the worst score for cost. In terms of safety and ease of entry, St. Louis, Missouri, came in last.
WalletHub’s list didn’t have any places in North Dakota, South Dakota, Maine, Arkansas, Iowa, Vermont, Utah, or South Carolina.
