Looking at data from the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services, we can see areas where violent and property crimes are on the rise.
Seven Index crime categories—murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault—as well as the property crimes of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft are used by the FBI and New York State as indications of overall crime trends. These categories were established by the FBI to facilitate consistent reporting of crimes in all 50 states.
Based on information from the FBI, HouseGrail examined some of the riskiest cities in New York.
While our main focus for our findings was on the rates of violent and murderous crimes, we also made an effort to use historical data and connect it to current patterns. An area’s ranking increased if crime there is an annual increase; however, if crime is declining, it decreased slightly.
