My Essential Pregame Playlist Songs

Every athlete prepares for a game in a different way. Each has their own rituals, whether it is putting on their socks a certain way, eating a certain snack before a game or making sure they get to the court/field and warm up the same way every time. But no matter what, most athletes will pop on their headphones and listen to music.

Music plays a big role in getting athletes into the right headspace. I’d like to share with you my essential pregame songs. Maybe you can add some to your playlist.

Starting things off: “Till I Collapse” by Eminem. This song just gets me going. Eminem starts by telling you that you’re going to feel weak and tired and feel like you’ll just want to give up, but he says you can’t, you got to find your inner strength and pull that out of you. You’ve got to find that motivation to not give up and not be a quitter. Geez I got goosebumps just reading the lyrics, let alone listening to them. In my opinion, every line after that intro is just so good. It’s easy to bop your head and get pumped up.

“My TIme” by Fabolous ft. Jeremiah. A bit of a throwback. I think the message in this song is really solid. The chorus highlights how you can’t worry about the past and you have to stay on your grind. When it’s your time, you gotta put it on the line. It’s just a message of when you get your shot to seize it and give it all you got. Super hype.

“Can’t Be Touched” by Roy Jones Jr. The beat in this is just immaculate. It’s ultra head bobbing music, it’s aggressive and makes you want to go out and fight. I think my favorite lyric is near the end, he sings “you will not win ‘cause I will not lose!” That just gets my juices flowing.

“Flex” by Polo G, Juice WRLD. I mean this is just a good song. I’m not sure how much motivation or inspiration there is; but it is just a vibe. Polo G is so good right now, and he hasn’t even begun to peak. He is only getting better. Juice, rest in peace, is the perfect complement to Polo G. Such smooth flow and lyrics.

“All The Above” by Maino ft T-Pain. “I’m on a mission to be what I’m destined to be. I’ve been through the pain and the sorrow, the struggle is nothing but love.” A quality opening lyric. It continues to inspire from there. Maino touches on his struggles coming up and how he earned what he got. Something all athletes want to do; earn and grind their way to the top. It’s almost necessary to struggle, it makes you appreciate the final destination.

“Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill. Hold on wait a minute, you thought I was finished? This song starts slow, Meek is sort of talking to you. He says he used to pray for times like this to rhyme like that, so he had to grind like this to shine like this. Then it picks up and gets more intense and you feel the energy coming off of Meek. I remember the Philadelphia Eagles played this on their Super Bowl Championship run and it seemed to have taken off there. Because it is an absolute banger of a song to get siked up too.

Those are my essential songs, the top of the iceberg. There are so many great songs. If you’d like to share your pregame songs and why you like them. Send me an email at eischeidlc@beloit.edu, you just might find your song in a future issue.
