Fatal Shooting After Beloit Memorial Basketball Game
A person was shot and killed Saturday night, Jan. 29 in the parking lot of Beloit Memorial High School. According to Beloit police reports the incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. The shooting followed a varsity basketball game between Beloit Memorial High School and La Follette High School.
The identity of the man shot has not been identified but the Beloit Police Department noted the person was an adult male. It has not been confirmed if he had any prior relationship to the game or if he was even in attendance. Police reports do indicate that the victim was a 19-year-old former Beloit Memorial student but his name has not been released. According to police records the man was shot and taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injury. There were also no reports of any events surrounding the shooting. This incident marks Beloit’s third homicide of the new year and the third homicide in less than a week.
Spokesman at Madison Metropolitan School District, Timothy LeMonds spoke further on the incident explaining that there was a brief lockdown at the high school. Those who were attending the game were asked to go back into the high school and wait for the lockdown to be lifted. The La Follette team was kept in the locker room for an estimated 10 minutes. No Madison students were in the parking lot during the time of the shooting. Shortly after the lockdown was lifted the La Follete basketball team was escorted to their team bus and returned back to Madison. “As far as we know it didn’t have any effect on anybody from our school district.”
LeMonds and police gave opposing information to the public as LeMonds states that the shooting happened during the game while the police state that the incident occurred afterwards.
LeMonds stated that the district has been in contact with the families of the team.
Madison Metropolitan School District’s superintendent wrote in response to the fatal shooting “Our hearts break for the Beloit school community, and we ask you to join us in keeping them in our thoughts in the upcoming days.” Following the shooting Sunday night there was a candlelight vigil to honor the former student. An estimated 30 to 40 people gathered to mourn the loss of the 19-year-old. Thoughts and prayers were said along with hopes of change to stop violence in the city.
The investigation of the shooting is ongoing. There have been no suspects arrested and no students were involved in the shooting. A spokesperson with the police department stated that the school district is in cooperation with investigators. The Beloit police are asking for help from the public in further investigating this fatal shooting. They ask if anyone has any video of the incident or more information to reach out to the police department.
