Los Angeles Lakers win the 2020 NBA Championship
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat in six games to bring home championship number 17, tying the Boston Celtics for most all time.
The Miami Heat played as well as they could have given the circumstance. They lost two of their best players in game 1. Both players would eventually return but they could not play at the level they needed to play at to win a championship. These injuries lead Miami to rely on Tyler Herro, a rookie, and Jimmy Butler, who averages 43 minutes per game out of a 48 minute game. By game six Butler was exhausted, he could not keep the same intensity.
Games 1 and 2 were won by the Lakers, both by double digit points. The Heat needed a big performance out of Jimmy Butler for game 3. That is just what they got. Butler erupted for 40 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists, a triple-double. The third player ever to record a 40-point triple-double in the finals. The other two; Jerry West and LeBron James. The Heat won by 11.
Lakers win game 4, they are up 3-1 in the series. Miami once again needed their best player to show up. He once again answered the bell. Butler had another triple-double with 35 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Butler’s firepower led them to a three point victory.
Game 6 is when the final horn of the 2020 NBA season would sound. Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat would run out of gas. The Lakers found another switch and flipped it to close it out. They won by 13. LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way with a terrific supporting cast that includes Danny Green, Rajon Rondo and Alex Caruso.
Even though the series went six games Miami was just hanging around. Their two wins were close and the four losses three of them were double digits. NBA Twitter had fun making memes about how the race for Finals MVP was closer than the games.
LeBron James would ultimately win his fourth Finals MVP award, trailing only Michael Jordan who has six. James averaged 29.8 ppg, 11.8 rpg and 8.5 apg. While Anthony Davis was close behind averaging 25 ppg, 10.7 rpg and 2 bpg.
This championship was extra meaningful for the Lakers because of the loss of Kobe Bryant. Bryant spent all 20 of his NBA season with the Lakers, winning them 5 NBA titles. Their most recent since 2010.
Fun fact: for the start of each of the last three decades (2000, 2010, 2020) The Lakers won the NBA championship.
