Fashion Hits and Misses of the 2020 Oscars

The Oscars. The night when all of us common people gather around the television to watch the star-studded red carpet and play our own game of fashion police. Honestly, I’m not sure what people care about more, the awards, or what the award recipient is wearing. And while we’re being truthful, the Oscars are almost more memorable for the fashion mistakes than the wins. This year there were some bold choices, so let’s get into the good, bad, and really bad wardrobe choices of Oscars 2020.

The suits. So many suits. Tuxedos are a classic staple of the red carpet. While it is always a good look, it just feels a little too safe for me. I mean, how many variations of a tux can Keanu Reeves find before it gets old? Don’t get me wrong, he looked amazing in this year’s Dolce and Gabbana version, but he’s teetering on the I’ve-worn-same-outfit-twice line. The classic look doesn’t hold a candle to the less traditional risks taken by other stars like Spike Lee, who wore a purple and yellow Gucci suit embroidered with the late Kobe Bryant’s number. 

On the other hand, Timothee Chalamet’s Prada suit was not a success. The vintage Cartier brooch was a nice touch, but the zip-up jacket combined with the slightly reflective fabric gave me more “I’m going to the gym” vibes than high-end designer. The athleisure trend really should definitely stay in high schools. 

And of course, Billy Porter completely stole the spotlight by saying “fuck you” to gender norms and wore a damn good Kensington Palace inspired gown by Giles Deacon, according to The New York Times. The glittering gold feathered bodice works beautifully with the copper tones and metallic print of the skirt, and the gold platform boots to match added just the right amount of attitude. This look certainly did not disappoint.

Another Billie, Billie Eilish, also brought her best to this year’s red carpet. I’ll be the first to admit, I always don’t love her shapeless and baggy style, but this white Chanel suit was a huge hit for me, and I’ll always support a gal passing up the overdone ball gown look. The subtle checker print coexists with the fuzzy texture of the jacket and pants harmoniously. The scattered Chanel emblems sit perfectly, and the mixed metals are extremely on-trend. The white lace gloves and dramatically long black nails are the perfect touches to finish off this look. While I absolutely adored this unique take on a two-piece suit, I will say the in-your-face brand logos were a little tacky for my liking.

Kristen Wiig never fails to make me laugh, and her Oscars dress didn’t fail to do so either. Unfortunately, not in a good way. Let’s start with the color. Who wears red to the red carpet? That was the first mistake, and the cut doesn’t get much better. I will say, I like the top. The straight-across neckline frames her face well, and the open back breaks up the solid red nicely. But the bottom just doesn’t do it for me. The pleated side panels remind me more of fish fins than the Valentino Haute Couture gown it is. The elbow-length black gloves she paired it with a scream in stark contrast against the vibrancy of the gown, and the cape trailing behind her just looks like she is literally wearing the carpet.

Cynthia Erivo’s White Atelier Versace Gown was simply stunning. I mean, that neckline. The innovative take on the one-shoulder trend shocked my system in the best way possible. And the sparkly silver netting on the open chest was a work of sheer genius. The silhouette of the voluptuous skirt hugged her body in all the right ways, and the thigh-high slit added a hint of sex appeal.  

The Oscars are always a night to remember and this year was no different. The better looks will go down in fashion history and be remembered for years to come. Hopefully, the not-so-good ones will learn from their mistakes. And just remember the Oscars are about the awards. Awards that apparently only men deserve.
