Minnesota Lynx are the best in the league, but are they the best in the state?

Minnesota is often not thought of as a state with good professional sports teams. Granted that is true for all of the Minnesota teams, with one exception. The Minnesota Lynx are by far the best sports team Minnesota has ever had.

In 2010 the Minnesota Lynx became a force to be reckoned with. They gained momentum with new head coach Cheryl Reeve, as well as drafted women’s basketball superstar Maya Moore as a first round pick. Moore Played at the University of Connecticut helped UConn win back to back national championships in 2009 and 2010 under coach Geno Auriemma. Moore left UConn as the most prolific winner in NCAA history.

After being drafted Maya Moore has been named to the All WNBA team six years in a row starting in 2012. Moore also went on to be named rookie of the year in her first season with the Lynx. Moore joined the ranks of Seimone Augustus, Rebekkah Brunson, and Lindsay Whalen add to the strength of the Lynx.
From 2010 to 2012 Seimone Augustus led the team with the highest average points per game. Rebekkah Brunson led in rebounds per game from 2010-2014, and Lindsay Whalen has led the team in assists per game for seven out of the last eight years. With a stellar team on the line up, the Lynx made it all the way to the finals in the WNBA.

The Lynx faced the Atlanta Dream in the league championship after beating Phoenix Mercury in the conference finals. After sweeping the Dream 88-74 in the first game, 101-95 in the second, and 73-67 in the third game the Minnesota Lynx brought the championship trophy and pride back to Minnesota. This was the first championship in any sport in Minnesota since the early 90’s.

Fast forward to 2017, the Minnesota Lynx have been to the WNBA finals 6 out of the last 7 years, taking home the championship in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017.

The team has set franchise and league records for the most consecutive wins to begin a season in 2012 and again in 2016. Coach Cheryl Reeve won the coach of the year award for 2011 and 2016, as well as many other records.

Players from the Lynx have consistently made the All-WNBA team since 2011 including Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore, and Lindsay Whalen. Consistently since 2011, the Minnesota lynx have had multiple players play in the all star games including Seimone Augustus, Rebekkah Brunson, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen.

On top players being extremely successful within the WNBA Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen, Sylvia Fowles, and Anna Cruz all play for the US Women’s national basketball team. They all helped to bring back gold from both the 2012 olympics in the United Kingdom and 2016 olympics Brazil.

Even with a team as successful as the Minnesota Lynx there isn’t extreme pride behind the team. The Lynx have brought in more league championships than any other team in Minnesota. You could say it is because they are a women’s team, but that excuse is old and not true.

Everyone loves to cheer for a winning team and there is a winning team that has more championships than any men’s team has ever been able to produce in Minnesota. Be sure to catch a game when the WNBA season begins in May 2018.
