Akres and Knaggs paved the way for the Bucs at the Midwest Conference Championships

The Bucs headed to North Chicago, IL this weekend to compete in the Midwest Conference Championship hosted by Lake Forest College on Saturday, October 27. This time, captain Dan Arkes’19 and Junior standout Fran Knaggs led the Bucs to the championship-worthy conference turnout.

Knaggs, coming out of a second place finish in the Wisconsin Private College Championship, came ready to race on Saturday. Knaggs registered a hefty PR dropping nine seconds and grabbing the fourteenth placement with a time of 23:58.0. Knaggs jumped up 82 places from her conference finish last year, which was “not something I was expecting at all starting this season” says Knaggs. Following Knaggs, was sophomore Brenda Martinez-Flores, with seniors Jamie Manchen and Sophia Miliotis taking 39th place, 46th place, and 55th place. Sophomore Fiona Cisemsia’21 wrapped up the scoring for the women with a 59th place finish.  

On the men’s side, senior captain Dan Arkes clocked in with a time of 26:03.7, finishing ninth out of 108 runners. Arkes was able to shave a whopping 25 seconds of his typical time, marking in at 5:12 minutes per mile. Following closely behind Arkes, was junior Charles Sandberg with a 25th place finish and a time of 27:17.2, and was followed by junior Noah Sission with a 39th place finish. John Tower Jr.’21 and Yusuke Hatano’20 swept in a few more point for the Bucs, leaving them with an eighth-place finish.

Both Arkes and Knaggs were named All-Conference athletes after their respective races. The Bucs will now have a few weeks before they enter competition in the NCAA Regional race on Saturday, November 10.Knaggs tells the Round table, “Going into regionals, I’m focusing on cutting my time down more and maintaining a faster overall mile pace.”

Arkes and Knaggs both look into dropping more seconds of their times and are hopeful for a solid finish in the regional action.
