Mac DeMarco announces new LP

Coley Brown

Everyone’s favorite gap-toothed lothario Mac DeMarco has announced that he will be releasing a new album on May 5, This Old Dog. The album will be release through Captured Tracks.

This LP follows up 2015’s mini-album Another One and Demarco’s 2014 breakout hit Salad Days. The new record is slated to have 13 tracks and, if one purchases it through iTunes, will come packaged with 11 instrumentals.

According to the album’s press release, DeMarco finished This Old Dog after moving to Los Angeles from New York City. “I demoed a full album, and as I was moving to the West Coast I thought I’d get to finishing it quickly,” he said. “But then I realized that moving to a new city, and starting a new life takes time. Usually I just write, record, and put it out; no problem. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. It was a different vibe.” DeMarco continued, “The majority of this album is acoustic guitar, synthesizer, some drum machine, and one song is electric guitar. So this is a new thing for me.”

The album’s first two cuts — acoustic number “My Old Man,” and the synth-drenched “This Old Dog” — it seems like this will be the most experimental album from DeMarco to date. This Old Dog is said to be more synth-heavy than any of his previous releases, but DeMarco said in the press release that he was “careful not to let that tactic overshadow the other instruments and overall unplugged mood of the work.”

“This is my acoustic album, but it’s not really an acoustic album at all,” he said. “That’s just what it feels like, mostly. I’m Italian, so I guess this is an Italian rock record.”

This Old Dog comes out May 5, and DeMarco will be begin touring the country starting in March.
