Cornell breaks home run record
During Tuesday’s double-header against Alverno College, the Beloit College softball team came through with two impressive wins thank to solid pitching and clutch hitting. Along with the 5-1 and 2-0 wins, a record-breaking performance by Tala Cornell’16 was the most notable moment of the action at Strong Stadium.
In game one, after falling behind early the Bucs came back strong when they tied the game and took the lead in the fourth on back-to-back singles up the middle by Tati Rodriguez’19 and Alex Kohn’19. Beloit got an insurance run in the fifth and, in the top of the seventh, got the icing on the cake when senior Tala Cornell overtook the Beloit College Softball all-time home run record with a two-run blast over the left field fence. Cornell’s homer, her first of the season, was the 18th of her career. The shot broke a tie with Carrie Bieniek for the Beloit College career home run record. Bieniek hit her 17 long balls from 1994-97.
Mikayla Martin’16 went the distance to pick up her second win of the season. She struck out three and walked none while allowing just six hits in her seven innings of work.
“It hasn’t really set in yet because it doesn’t really mean much to me right now,” said Cornell following her record-breaking performance. “I have worked really hard for this, but I am still finishing my senior year so I would definitely trade this honor for a conference championship. We all are working so hard and I am making sure we finish strong.”
Beloit returns to the diamond for a doubleheader against the Bluejays of Elmhurst College on Wednesday, March 30th at Salt Creek Park in Elmhurst, Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
